What does an author do when his protagonists come knocking at his door?

Behiç Ak added a new one to his children’s novels which are masterly illustrated also by him, reflecting the rich inner worlds, questionings and curiosity of children. Overview

How does an author build up his characters and set up his fiction? While our author who is unable to focus in his text is questioning all these, he finds himself in his own story when his lead protagonist comes knocking at his door. The interesting people he already knew from real life are all living in his story as extraordinary characters: Mathematician Mr. Mecnun; Doğan who is looking for his imaginary dog; Ms.Nigar with his travelling library; Şehrazat who is missing her mother, Mr. Muzaffer The Rooster, that wave coming at 6.44 pm and many more… Not only his protagonists but also the course of events would surprise our author who hears a loud cockcrow the day he sits at his desk to write.

Behiç Ak

He was born in Samsun and studied architecture in Yıldız University and İstanbul Technical University. He’s a well-known cartoonist, author, illustrator and documentary film director. He illustrates daily cartoons for the Cumhuriyet Newspaper since 1982. His cartoons were exhibited in several countries like Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Besides his plays Separation (Ayrılık) and Building (Bina), his two plays named Fault Line (Fay Hattı) and City for One (Tek Kişilik Şehir) were staged in Europe and attracted big interest. The documentary film he produced and directed in 1994, named The History of Censorship in Turkish Cinema – Black Screen (Türk Sinemasında Sansürün Tarihi devamı için tıklayınız
