Overview
Ala is a curious child who watches the fertile Anatolian lands from Rainbow House up in the clouds. Ala’s friends, Wise Rain and Mad Wind, know that Ala will want to go down one day. And Ala does. In the second story, “Priene, The Marble City”, Ala listens to the story of Priene of 2500 years ago told by Nikeso, a priestess of Demeter, and strolls in the city’s streets washed by the rain. In the third story, “Gods on the Mountains: Labraynda”, Ala goes to the Zeus Temple in Labraynda, one of the oldest sacred areas of Anatolia, high up the mountains and overlooking the Milas plain, where Pani, the ivory goat, tells her about the local ceremonies and rituals. In the last story, “Blue Times: Halikarnassos”, Ala meets Herodotos, the writer, known as the father of history. Ala is told the story of Halikarnassos situated on the location of present day tourism heaven Bodrum and the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, by Herodotos who was born and raised in this city.
Mine Soysal
Mine Soysal was born in 1959 in İstanbul. Soysal graduated from Istanbul University, Department of Ancient Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures in 1981. Until 1994 she worked as an archeologist and researcher in Istanbul Archeology Museums and implemented exhibition projects. She founded Günışığı Kitaplığı in 1996, a publishing house specialised in Turkish and world literature for children and young adults. In 2005, she prepared the story book Ala, the Child on the Road (Ala Çocuk Yollarda) for children. She currently holds interactive debate programs about the cultural history of Istanbul and Anatolia for elementary and high school students.
